  3. Hardware-Independent TCP/IP Networking Software Links DOS and Windows
  4. Clients With Enterprise-Wide Information Systems

  6. BOSTON, Mass., NETWORLD -- February 11, 1991 -- Novell, Inc., developer of
  7. NetWare systems software products, today announced a new, hardware- and
  8. media-independent version of LAN WorkPlace for DOS connectivity software,
  9. which provides DOS and Windows users with direct, concurrent access to UNIX
  10. systems, DEC VAX minicomputers, IBM mainframes and NetWare servers, via the
  11. industry-standard TCP/IP protocol suite.

  13. Hardware- and media-independence allow LAN WorkPlace for DOS 4.0 to operate
  14. on hundreds of available of Ethernet, Token-Ring and Arcnet adapters.  The
  15. product also lets users maintain simultaneous sessions in, and move data
  16. among, a variety of computing environments.  For example, users can cut and
  17. paste between a UNIX mail message and a DOS-based word processing document,
  18. or move numerical data from a host-based spreadsheet into a DOS-based
  19. spreadsheet.

  21. "Many customers have asked for a fully supported TCP/IP implementation that
  22. leverages their existing hardware and integrates TCP/IP services with the
  23. NetWare environment," said Bob Davis, director of product marketing at
  24. Novell's San Jose development center.  "LAN WorkPlace for DOS 4.0 gives
  25. users full citizenship in a variety of computing environments, and allows
  26. them direct access to the broad range of services typical of today's
  27. multi-vendor networks."

  29. LAN WorkPlace for DOS 4.0 is based on an optimized TCP/IP protocol stack
  30. designed by Novell to provide DOS and/or Windows users with
  31. high-performance TCP/IP connectivity while consuming a minimum of system
  32. memory.  The TCP/IP transport facilities are augmented by two full sets of
  33. new applications that provide File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and terminal
  34. emulation (Telnet) services for both Windows and the conventional DOS
  35. environment.

  37. The TCP/IP elements of LAN WorkPlace for DOS 4.0 also allow NetWare clients
  38. to connect directly to NetWare v3.11 servers that are accessible only via
  39. TCP/IP routes, or to coexist with NetWare v3.11 servers in an environment
  40. where only TCP/IP transport protocols are to be used.

  42. For example, remote NetWare clients can log into NetWare v3.11 servers via
  43. a TCP/IP internet because the product encapsulates SPX/IPX datagrams,
  44. NetWare's native transport protocol suite, within TCP/IP packets.  The
  45. target NetWare server then strips off the TCP/IP header, allowing users
  46. transparent access to remote NetWare v3.11 resources such as file systems
  47. and print queues.

  49. LAN WorkPlace for DOS 4.0 features:

  51. o    File transfer -- FTP client and server applications allow users to
  52.      transfer files among computer systems that support FTP.
  53.  
  54. o    Terminal emulation via Telnet -- DEC VT100 and VT220 terminal
  55.      emulators are included for both Windows and DOS.  
  56.  
  57. o    Support for NetWare and other SPX/IPX-based applications via TCP/IP --
  58.      includes both DOS client TCP/IP transport and an ODI driver that
  59.      allows TCP/IP packets to carry IPX packets across an IP internet.

  61. New LAN WorkPlace for DOS 4.0 Windows Applications
  62.  
  63. o    Host Presenter -- provides up to ten simultaneous Telnet session
  64.      windows (emulating a VT220, VT52 or VT100 terminal) to multiple
  65.      TCP/IP-equipped hosts.

  67. o    Serving FTP -- provides an FTP server that runs in the background
  68.      under Windows, waiting for an FTP user to establish a connection with
  69.      the PC and initiate file transfers to or from local disk drives or
  70.      NetWare volumes.

  72. o    File Express -- provides a graphical front-end that makes FTP file
  73.      transfer simple and intuitive.

  77. In the United States and Canada,  LAN WorkPlace for DOS 4.0 lists for U.S.
  78. $450 for the single-user version and U.S. $1995 for the 10-user version.
